AI for Construction Distribution - Boom or Bust?

AI for Construction Distribution - Boom or Bust?
George ConnollybyGeorge Connolly

As we begin 2026, many construction trade distributors are navigating how and whether to embrace AI in their businesses. Questions surface repeatedly: Is our organization ready for AI? Where do we focus to generate real value? Do we have the right data foundation in place?  Will AI investments deliver measurable ROI, or is this simply another wave of hype?

These concerns are valid, particularly in an industry focused on balancing growth with cost control. The real challenge is not whether AI has potential, but how distributors can move forward in a way that drives tangible results.

In a recent interview, Alex Karp, CEO of Palantir, provides real insight into the AI market that’s good news for construction distributors looking to translate AI ambition into practical outcomes.

Today, nearly every distributor is experimenting with AI in some form, from CRM chatbots to early supply chain pilots. The real question is no longer whether to invest in AI, but how to move forward in a way that delivers measurable value and ROI. In the recent interview, Karp distinguishes between two types of AI. The first is what many have come to know as “Hype – AI,” Large Language Models that have a “wow” factor but often are difficult to translate into revenue or cost savings in a distribution business. The second one, Karp calls “Real AI,” focuses on the systems and processes that deliver measurable outcomes across core operational functions such as procurement, transportation, warehousing, payables, pricing, sales, and receivables. This approach aligns more closely with agentic AI applied to streamlined, well defined business processes.

Karp’s view is direct. While hype driven AI may capture attention, it rarely delivers sustained ROI. Agentic and Enterprise AI, when applied thoughtfully, drives productivity gains and translates into improved revenue and earnings. For construction distributors, the opportunity is clear.  If we invest in substance over style, AI can deliver a meaningful boom in productivity and performance. If we pursue novelty without impact, the outcome is far more likely to be a bust.

AI for Construction Distribution - Join the Boom

AAXIS and Palantir take an approach to AI that recognizes each construction trade distributor uniquely, with distinct tools, processes and paths to real economic value. In our experience, no two distributors, even within the same market segment, operate the same way. Differences in geographies, customers, vendors, and business processes consistently set them apart from their nearest competitors.

Off the shelf solutions often fall short, delivering either too much generic functionality or too little insight for a distributor’s specific needs.  Our approach is different. We move quickly to understand a distributor’s business, define a clear road map for process improvement, and begin delivering measurable value, one functional area at a time.

By leveraging existing systems and data, we help construction distributors achieve positive, quantifiable change in months, not years. Powered by Palantir Foundry and delivered by AAXIS, B2B eCommerce Integrator of the Year, our approach is designed to unlock real economic value.
